Goal Setting – Setting The Bar
Setting goals is a key part of any manager’s job. Through goal setting, you define business
outcomes that you and your team will accomplish collectively and individually.
Managed effectively, the goal-setting process creates a long-term vision that motivates you and
your employees to reach even the most challenging objectives.
Goals Setting Should Have Three Key Steps
DEVELOPMENT:
As you begin the Development process ask yourself these questions:
• What are your real performance expectations?
• Are your expectations the same for everyone?
• Do you know everyone’s role in the plan?
• Are you more accountable than everyone else?
• Do you hold your client accountable?
• Do you hold your boss accountable?
Do you confuse current reality with possibility?
This becomes the foundation for setting your Smart Goals. We spoke about this process in the
Personal Action Plans newsletter recently. Once again, your smart goals must be:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Attainable
• Relevant
• Time Based
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short;
but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” Michelangelo
ACCOUNTABILITY
Accountability begins with your communication.
• Good leaders know both the goals and the roles
• Integrate the goals into daily interactions
• Communicate progress/deficit regularly, positively
• Corrective actions are part of the plan
• Setting the bar higher requires the leader to create a work environment in which everyone
believes in the greater goal and owns their personal role
“Gentlemen, we will chase perfection, and we will chase it relentlessly, knowing all the
while we can never attain it. But along the way, we shall catch excellence.” Vince
Lombardi
ALIGNMENT
Alignment begins to happen when the process and goals become Personal:
• Define individual targets within the greater plan
• Hold people accountable for what they can control
• Short-term incentives reinforce long-term belief
• Learn what drives each individual
• Build emotional connections to individual and team/goals
• Recognize individual contributions
• Personal performance is required for group success
“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.“
Henry Ford
In our next newsletter we will talk about the Balanced Scorecard

” In the service business, people are our most important asset. The time we spend with our people is an investment in the future, not an expense or burden on our time. This time you with your people is an investment. You cannot successfully grow the business without an investment in people. “
