LEADERS MUST SET THE TONE FROM THE TOP

As leaders, at every level, we have the responsibility to Set The Tone. As we go through our daily ritual of reading or watching currents events, it is hard not to wonder if these people understand the difference from setting the tone to being tone deaf.

I have always believed that setting the tone is one of our most important responsibilities as a leader. Let’s talk about how we set that tone through our daily actions and routines, so we do not become Tone Deaf.

It starts by looking at our business holistically for things we can do throughout the day, months, and year to create consistency and balance through our actions, words, and deeds.

Exceptional leaders understand that they will succeed in differentiating themselves through technology and operational excellence because of and with their people. We should aspire to be an Employer of Choice who successfully attracts and retains talent because employees want to work here. We must provide leadership and direction to our people and persevere through challenging periods. As the leader you must commit to being a person, a leader, and a company of the highest integrity.

No matter what your leadership role, you have a tremendous impact on your people. It’s all about alignment and commitment.

Let’s start with Values.
Values are the foundation from which everything we have to offer as a company and you as a leader is based – our processes, services, daily work actions and commitment to excellence. Our Values, and our adherence to them, set the direction and establish the necessary culture for our organization to succeed. Here are some of the values that I believe will help you set the Tone from the TOP. You will have your own set, but regardless you must first define Who You Are, What You Stand For and What You Won’t Compromise to set the tone in a fair, consistent, thoughtful, and even manner. It will become your brand and your brand promise. This will provide clarity about who you are and what we are as a company, and how we will conduct ourselves, and how we wish to be viewed by others through our actions. Here is my list. I always welcome your additions and comments:

  • We recognize that our people are our most important asset, and we will be regarded as an
    Employer of Choice.
  • We believe integrity and excellence is the core of all we do.
  • Each of us will conduct ourselves with honesty and integrity.
  • We will adhere to our policies and guidelines. If there is something we doubt we will raise
that doubt until it is addressed.
  • We make tough decisions, accept responsibility and report bad news.
  • We don’t stop at the first right answer. We focus on new ways to create solutions.
  • We embrace change and thoughtfully use processes, technology, and tools for results.
  • We have a vision and seek ways to transfer that vision to action.
  • We are committed to supporting a climate for success for all and providing a safe work
environment for employees, customers, and the public.
  • We are humble and support each other.
  • We work together as a team, are flexible and will adapt to changing conditions.
  • We will be respected leaders among our peers and within the industry.
  • We will learn and grow from our challenges, and we will celebrate and recognize our
    success.
  • We are a company that lives its values.

These values are crucial as we work to set the Tone From The Top as leaders, mentors, and role models.
